A Quantitative Approach to Assessing System Evolvability
نویسنده
چکیده
When selecting a system j?om multiple candidates, the customer seeks the one that best meets his or her needs. Recently the desire for evolvable systems has become more important and engineers are striving to develop systems that accommodate this need. In response to this search for evolvabili@, we present a historical perspective on evolvability, propose a refined definition of evolvabiliy, and develop a quantitative method for measuring this property. We address this quantitative methodology from both a theoretical and practical perspective. This quantitative model is then applied to the problem of evolving a lunar mission to a Mars mission as a case study.

A quantitative analysis of evolvability for an evolutionary fuzzy logic controller
This paper presents a quantitative analysis of evolvability with evolutionary activity statistics in an evolutionary fuzzy system. In general, one can estimate the performance of an evolved fuzzy controller by its fitness. However, it is difficult to explain how its fitness or adaptability has been obtained. Evolutionary activity is used to measure the evolvability of fuzzy rules and explain wh...
متن کاملA multi agent method for cell formation with uncertain situation, based on information theory
This paper assumes the cell formation problem as a distributed decision network. It proposes an approach based on application and extension of information theory concepts, in order to analyze informational complexity in an agent- based system, due to interdependence between agents. Based on this approach, new quantitative concepts and definitions are proposed in order to measure the amount of t...
متن کاملRobustness and Evolvability of Recombination in Linear Genetic Programming
The effect of neutrality on evolutionary search is known to be crucially dependent on the distribution of genotypes over phenotypes. Quantitatively characterizing robustness and evolvability in genotype and phenotype spaces greatly helps to understand the influence of neutrality on Genetic Programming. Most existing robustness and evolvability studies focus on mutations with a lack of investiga...
متن کاملA mechanistic study of evolvability using the mitogen-activated protein kinase cascade.
Evolvability is a function of the way genetic variation interacts with the mechanisms that produce the phenotype. We explore an explicitly mechanistic way of studying the evolvability of phenotypes that are produced by a relatively simple genetic mechanism, the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade. We developed a quantitative model of MAPK activation that can be used to study the eff...
متن کاملQualitative and quantitative approaches to analyse reliability of a mechatronic system: a case
The main research intent of this paper is to introduce the use of fault tree analysis (FTA) and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) in conjunction to analyse the risk and reliability of a complex mechatronic system in both qualitative and quantitative manner. The major focus is on handling imprecise and vague information with the help of fuzzy synthesis of information. A complex mechatroni...
